The fourth grade immersion and international students have a transformative experience in the garden with the “Sustainable Amicus Project” (SAP). Students started in June by composting waste from horses and food scraps into rich, fertile soil. In the next phase, students worked as landscape architects in small groups to design a scale model of a garden. The resources included old telephone poles that were going to be thrown away, extra stones from previous AMICUS projects, old card board boxes and circular cement forms that were moved to utilize them more efficiently. This is project based learning and integrates physical education, English and social studies. The project has used zero school funds. Stop by the garden outside the science room to see the students’ hard work.
