On Tuesday, September 17, the ‘Philosophy Café’ was held at AMICUS
Sponsored by the Ryukyu Shimpo, in coordination with students and a professor of University of the Ryukyus University, this children’s philosophy workshop marks the 4th year at AMICUS.
This year’s workshop was held incorporating “Shimakutuba” (Okinawan Dialect) since September 18th was designated as the ‘Shimakutuba Day’.
Divided into 8 groups, participants took pictures with their iPads of scenery and objects that reminded them of their chosen Okinawan dialect, and discussed why they chose them.
Unfortunately, it was raining and they only walked around the courtyard, but everyone did a good job of finding things.
For example, one child choosing “n-ma (horse)” took a picture of the grass and said, “Because it is food for horses.”
Some of them were discussing whether to choose a “churakagi (beautiful)” girl or a cute snail. The students learned that philosophy has very deep themes, and that it can be taken up even in our daily lives.
