Today's AMICUS 2024 / 01 / 22

Introduction of Oni Muuchi and Setsubun

The Team International, formed by AMICUS teachers, will introduce some Japanese and Okinawan events related to Oni (Ogre) during this season!

In Okinawa, Muuchi, a rice cake wrapped in a shell ginger leaf, is eaten on December 8th of the lunar calendar.
Muuchi is said to have its origin in a story about a sister who defeats her brother who has turned into an ogre.

Setsubun is also believed to be the division of the seasons between winter and spring, and is celebrated around February 3rd every year.
Setsubun is a traditional Japanese event in which beans are thrown to ward off evil spirits and pray for good health.

The members of the Team International also held a mamemaki and wished for good health by eating Muuchis!
