G8 students had their school trip in Okinawa for two nights and three days from Jan 12 to 14.
Day 1
In the morning, they walked around the local residential area in Urasoe city to learn about water while thinking about the point of view of SDGs.
In the afternoon, they had a chance to have a discussion with researchers at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University (OIST) in Onna Village.
Day 2
On the second day, they headed to northern Okinawa and visited Yambaru National Park, Daisekirinsan, and Cape Hedo.
They learned about the great nature of Yambaru (northern part of Okinawa) with the tour guides.
Day 3
They went to a sugarcane field in Onna village to do a sugarcane cutting experience and they had a lecture from a local farmer.
After they harvested the sugarcane, they actually extracted the juices from the sugarcane plants and made brown sugar!
They could hear from the farmer and they even experienced sugarcane harvesting and brown sugar making by themselves which turned out to be a precious memory.
G8 rediscovered some attractive points of Okinawa by learning and living close to the locals of Okinawa for these three days.
The trip turned out to be a fruitful experience where the students were able to learn about nature, creatures, plants, and agriculture from a viewpoint of SDGs.
We are hoping that the G8 students will move on to the next step to take”Action” by keeping in mind what they’ve learned about SDGs.
