Here’s Episode 3 of the “Saving Minami Killifish from Extinction” Project.
This time the lesson was about how to prepare the living environment for the killifish.
After a month-long dry, we started filling up the pond again.
Let’s discuss what to prepare for the killifish
Obviously we can’t just deliberately throw the fish in the pond with nothing in it. Just like we can’t live in an empty house with no furniture or electric appliances.
Should we buy the plants? Should we pick it from somewhere?
What about water lilies? They look beautiful? No, they’re non-native species.
“Then, why not Native Species?” After all the discussions, we came up with the following 3 types.
Hornworts
These are found in rivers and swamps all over the world, and there were some in Okinawa too. The name came from the leaves in shape of a horn.
Curly Pondweed
These can be found in rivers, lakes, swamps all over Japan. They usually sink underwater, but sometimes, can be found on the surface.
Najas Minor
They are mostly found in swamps, and rice fields, towards western Japan. These species are also one of the vulnerable species near extinction.
Then, the soil.
Thanks to Mr. Tokutake, he brought us a few bags of soil for the pond.
This will be a good layer on the bottom of the pond, and it will help the water plants grow.
