Today the SHinE (Parents’ Association) members of Storytelling Circle came to do a reading in the school library.
This time we had the story tellers collaborated with piano music, also by a member of SHinE.
The children were very excited too, to see their friends at school during summer break.
I would like to share some of the world of magical story telling time.
The Little Match Girl
There was the scene where the little girl lights the match and meanders into the world of imagination. The story teller reads in her tone of voice as if we are all in a shivering-cold town with the little girl, feeling sorry for what she is going through.
The moment the little girl lights the match, the piano player plays the Glissando, sliding the keyboard from left to right. The Glissando makes it sound like as if the girl’s imagination becomes real when she lights the match.
It’s such a magic having the piano played with story telling.
The Lantern Ghost
This story was read in a paper theatre form, which is about the Lantern Ghost, who wants to be friends with everyone, but scares everyone off for its appearance.
In the end, the Ghost meets an old man, who was thankful for the light the ghost provided.
“It doesn’t matter what you look like. You’re helping me read my book with your light!!”
Books are always full of moral learning. We all learned that there is always someone who needs you for who you are.
Onara Manzai – The Fart Comedy
Here appearing from the back with the upbeat music, next story was called, “The Fart Comedy” – A story about a boy passing gas but the gas happened to offer the boy to start a Manzai, a stand-up comedy unit with the two of them.
“I can only exist for such a short while. May you kindly become my partner for a comedy duo?”
Manzai has been a big culture in the Western region of Japan, especially in Osaka. The story tellers, with their brilliant Osaka dialect and intonation, it made the story sound even more Osakan comedy-like.
It makes us feel like we want to hear more. Round of applause to our story tellers!!!
Can’t wait to hear more!!!
