Last week, Grade 3 students had a field trip “bus tour” in Uruma-city as a part of the Social Study curriculum course unit “Our favorite hometown”.
First, the students visited the Gushikawa thermal power plant. At the plant, the power plant staff explained to the students in very easy way to understand using movie clips and pictures about the process of how coal is used to generate the electricity. In addition, the students had a chance to try human power electric generation and watched a 3D movie to experience the world of electricity and energy.
After the power plant, the students crossed the bridge “Kaichu Road” to Henza jima surrounded by the beautiful ocean and visited Okinawa Petroleum Base Co. The students enjoyed learning through “quiz format” about that the oil is brought all the way from Saudi Arabia and stored in the base for all over Japan. The property of the plant is four times bigger than Tokyo Disneyland, so they tool a bus tour see the facility. The height of the oil storage tank in white color is same as seven stories building. Next destination was a world heritage site, Katsuren-Jo. It took less than 10 minutes to climb to the top of the site for our super energetic G3 students! They used compasses which they learned how to use during the Social Study class, and marked on the worksheet what they could see at each direction. They found “Gushikawa thermal power plant” and “Okinawa Petroleum Base Co.” where they visited in the morning. At the end, they drove by the Uruma-city municipal office and went back to AMICUS. The schedule was tight, but the students learned so many good things about Uruma city.
