Learning to play. Playing to learn. :-)

Sweet Potato Digging

We went on our first field trip this year! The weather cooperated really well. Our Kindergarteners enjoyed a lot not only the sweet potato digging but also playing in the park.

After the farmer’s explanation, kinder friends dug up sweet potatoes with their full power while feeling the soil’s texture using shovels and their hands.

“There are baby potatoes!”

“I’ve got such a big potato!”

“Lots of potatoes are connected!”

Some friends enjoyed playing roles like characters of “The Gigantic Turnip” while digging sweet potatoes and said “Untokosho! Dokkoisho!”

There were few people except AMICUS kinder friends at Zanpa Park. It seemed to be the place to ourselves! After eating lunch and playing at the park, we walked to see the Zanpa lighthouse.

It was definitely a wonderful day! 🙂

Autumn is here again

The days are getting cooler and more comfortable. We hope you enjoyed Fall Break.

Term 1 is finished and we have worked hard to complete our big Term 1 project- the map of Okinawa. We will upload the students’ presentations soon.

Term 2 has now started and we are moving on with our learning about our Earth. We are now learning about our amazing country- JAPAN! We asked students what they know about Japan and then showed them many famous things around Japan.

In Phonics Time we are learning a new song: “Autumn Song”. Please enjoy singing together at home.

We finished our “What is in Your Garden” book. They enjoyed reading to teachers and to each other before taking it home. Please read together with your child at home. We are ready for the next book…

Students are also learning new sentences: I like to eat…/ He likes to eat… / She likes to eat… / We like to eat… / They like to eat… We will make our new book soon.

In Math Time we are learning to play board games with dice and learning how to make weather graphs.

Our Kinder Garden is still growing okra. We counted 16 okras growing now.

We cleaned our other vegetable bed so we can plant other vegetables.

Together with K1 friends K2s planted new banana trees!

We enjoyed Calligraphy Time with Mr. Nakasone. We learned how to do shiritori.

Enjoying lunch together

*We have many lost and found items in Kinder. Please let us know if something belongs to your child.*

Theme: Plants

K1 friends have started our OCTOBER THEME which is PLANTS.

It started with our SEPTEMBER THEME which is BUTTERFLY. K1 friends enjoyed the activities and learned more about butterfly.

At the end, everyone thought of providing food for the butterfly so, we decided to plant some flowers. They also made their own planter using pet bottles.

We are looking forward to take care of our flowers.
They give water to their plants everyday.
Look at that small sprout coming out 🙂

Then, we received banana saplings from Mr. Patterson. Since our K1 friends love banana, they eagerly asked us if they can plant them.

Their motivation and interest heightened even more when they saw new books in K1 classroom Library.

These are some of their words while reading books.

Student1: “Wow, I like this flower.”

Student2: “Oh, this is the stinky flower that we heard from Storytime.”

Student3: “Wow, the plant started from a seed then it goes bigger and bigger!”

Student4: “I want to make flowers!”

So, we decided to make a PLANT ART.

It was a challenging but fun activity inclusive of 3 MISSIONS:

(1) MATH MISSION: Count the letters of your name.

(2) LITERACY MISSION: Find the letters of your name.

(3) ART MISSION: Make any plant out of your name.

They need to make their own plant using their own creativity and imagination. Everyone challenged themselves to produce their original work.

Some friends present in front and encourage other friends to use different kinds of materials.

Generally, it was a challenge for them but they did it well in the end.

Good job K1 friends. 🙂

K2 Enjoying Earth Projects

Our “Map of Okinawa” is complete. It has been a fun, creative process. K2s are now working hard on their presentations. They have a lot of information to share with their friends!

Making Okinawa

Writing presentation speeches.

“What did you make?”

“We made a forest”

“We made the ocean and Churaumi Aquarium.”

“We made a cave.”

“We made Shuri Castle.

“We made AMICUS.”

“We made Okinawan houses, a hotel, a monorail, and an apartment.”

Composting

We started composting our fruit and vegetable skins as a way of taking care of our Earth.

Phonics Time

We are making BINGO. “Do you like soup?” “Yes, I do.” “No, I don’t.”

We played using the phrases, “Do you like___?” “Yes, I do.”/ “No, I don’t.”

We made a new sight words book. They enjoy reading their books!

Outside Time

We are so happy to enjoy the cooler fall weather. K2 friends can play outside for a long time.

Calligraphy

K2s interests are growing everyday. Recently they are interested in “shopping” and making “goods.” So we are enjoying Playing Shops every afternoon. They are trying to use their English in many ways!

K2 enjoying September

September 1st a big typhoon came to Okinawa. September 2nd we had a holiday. September 3rd we came to school and worked hard all morning cleaning up outside Kinder.

K2 friends have been practicing their hiragana to prepare for Calligraphy Time. They enjoyed Mr. Nakasone’s lesson about あいうえお and かきくけこ. They played hiragana relay games and showing each other their writing skills.

Continuing with our “Earth” theme, we decided to start by focusing on Okinawa. This week we started creating a 3-D map of Okinawa using recycled materials. K2s made teams and are making models of popular sights in Okinawa- forests, caves, Amicus, Shuuri castle, Okinawan houses and the ocean. They have great imagination!

We harvested seeds from our morning glory flowers. We got so many seeds!

Save the ocean

Moving on…to learn more

We had been learning about insects for the past several weeks. This week we had our class meeting to decide what we will learn about next. Our new topic is…EARTH!

We used Google Earth to look at our Earth. We looked for K2 teachers’ houses, Amicus Kindergarten and each friend’s house. We used the sentences, “Where do you live?” “I live in ______.”

We are getting ready for Family Sports Day.

K2s are continuing to learn phonics and sight words. New words this week: what, a, in, my, your, have. We are making a new sight words book, too.

August birthday party…

We are learning a lot from friends’ Show and Tell and enjoying writing in our journals.
