Fun Time with Mr. Teruya

K1 Nature Crafting with Mr. Teruya #2

After a short absence, we were happy to be back together again. Today we enjoyed making crafts together with Mr. Teruya. We used pinecones to make kendama toys. Mr. Teruya encouraged K1s to think of how to use recycled materials (used containers, etc.) to make interesting and fun crafts instead of just throwing them away. Please help your child to think creatively about recyclable goods at home.

K2 Fish-making time with Mr. Teruya

K2 friends are learning about many sea animals so we invited Mr. Teruya to teach us how to make fish using nature material. He suggested using Adan leaves. After that, we made it with him.

K2 friends really enjoyed this time. However, they want to use another material to make fish and add it to their aquarium so, they made another one using construction paper. Miss Sawako also read a story about Adan tree.

Thank you Mr. Teruya for another creative learning and fun-filled experience that you have shared with us. ๐Ÿ™‚

Peace Week (Part 2)

Our PEACE Week has been concluded. As a recap, we look back at the activities that we had from Monday to Wednesday.

On Thursday, June 23rd, we commemorate the Okinawa PEACE MEMORIAL DAY (ๆ…ฐ้œŠใฎๆ—ฅ).

Last week, Friday, we had a PEACE ASSEMBLY. Prior to that day, we ask our students a question: “What does peace mean to you?” We asked them to think and present their answers.

Below is the video of our event.

After that, we had play time in each classroom with K1 and K2 as partners. They played musical chair and newspaper dance.

Then, in the afternoon, G9 friends came. They observed Kindergarten a month ago and came up with different toys that thought are appropriate and interesting for them.

True enough, they had fun. As everyone agreed on, PEACE means HAPPINESS. Let’s continue to be peacemakers Kinder friends. โ˜ฎ๏ธ

Peace Week (Part 1)

This year, Okinawa commemorates 50 years of reversion from American rule to being part of Japan again. Thus, we did many activities about PEACE in Kinder.

K1 friends listened to many stories, made their dove craft and drew their peace art.

K2 friends also did many activities about PEACE. We started with a story.

Then, we had activities like “Friends Around the World”, “Are you a peace maker or peace breaker?” and “Helping Each Other during the war in Okinawa”.

After that, we learned the money of Japan, America, Philippines, Indonesia, Taiwan.

Then, we used money during our Special Activity when they used yen to enjoy buying pizza and ice cream, watching the aquarium and zootopia, and playing the traditional Japanese games and ring toss.

G5 friends also came to share with us the craft that they have learned from TAIWAN FRIENDS. G5 students explained that the Taiwan students taught Amicus students in the past how to make it.ย It’s all about connecting with other people in different countries, working together to create peace and passing on traditions. They enjoyed making and playing Kendama together. **The blue bird is a blue magpie (the national bird of Taiwan) in the picture is one of the gifts that we received from our Taiwan friends last year.***

In addition, Okinawa Peace Memorial Day (ๆ…ฐ้œŠใฎๆ—ฅ) is always celebrated every June 23rd. Today, we hope that you can find quiet time to remember the past, celebrate the present and hope for a more peaceful life in Okinawa and the whole world.

Happy Children’s Day

Today, we celebrate Children’s Day in Japan. When you look around, you will see a lot of cloth carp streamers that are flown on poles outside of public buildings and private houses to bring luck and good fortune to the children inside. Koi fish, or Carp, are believed to be strong, spirited fish and are revered for their determination in fighting as they swim upstream and through powerful waterfalls. Koinobori symbolize the desire for children to become brave and strong individuals. (Source: https://aboutjapan.japansociety.org/kodomo_no_hi_childrens_day_celebration)

Our Kinder friends made their own Koinobori too.  First, we did tie dye.

Then, they made their own carp.

We also a big one that is in front of Kindergarten Building. ๐Ÿ˜‰

We wish our Kinder friends strength and happiness in their life. Happy Children’s Day ๐Ÿ˜€

K2 Activity Time

From last year, now, K2 friends have learned about SDGs. They made posters to promote taking care and saving of our MOTHER EARTH. ๐ŸŒŽ

To help saving the earth, OUR LONG-TERM GOAL is to make compost by collecting banana, orange, and others compostable garbage that they our Kinder friends have after snack and lunch. The process involves decomposing organic material into a humus-like material, known as compost, which is a good fertilizer for plants.

We make compost to save the earth and to use this organic fertilizer in our garden in Kinder. Gardening is a part of our everyday routine. This year, we started growing different kinds of plants too.

This whole year project is very close to our heart so we will update often as soon as our new plants grow or when we plant again. ๐Ÿ™‚

Another goal came up so, we had a special meeting. After that, our K2 friends have decided to continue being earth savers. So, we will focus on one topic and starting this month our THEME is OCEAN.

K2 friends are really concerned with the ocean animals that they have learned so, they thought of taking care of the ocean. Thus, we asked them what would they like to do?

Student 1: Let’s clean up the ocean.

Teacher: Why do you want to clean up the ocean?

Student 2: Because if the ocean animals eat garbage, they will die.

This determination in them made us decide to plan our first field trip of the year. We coordinated with Uruma City Office about BEACH CLEANING ACTIVITY. But before that, we had a review of the segregation of the garbage that we may find on the shore.

Beach Cleaning Day: We did our best to clean up and of course, had fun after. ๐Ÿ™‚

After our field trip, we’ve discussed about our special mission “beach cleaning”.

Student 1: I got a lot of trash.

Student 2: I found many plastic.

Student 3: I am happy because I got some materials that we can use for Art.

Student 4: I am shock to see many garbage on the shore.

Others: We enjoyed cleaning the beach together.

The next day, we had garbage sorting activity using some of the trash that we have collected on the shore.

Some of these garbage were put in the garbage and others are useful for us so clean them up and kept for future use. What do you think can we do with these? Do you think they can turn into something beautiful? ๐Ÿ˜€
