We also learned about how to ride bicycles safely. At the fire department, we saw a ladder truck that can extend up to 35 meters. From Amicus, Mr. Mark and Ms Armstrong bravely tried climbing the ladder truck. On Friday, July 18th, during 3rd and 4th periods, we held a special grade-level event organized by parents. The day began with a visit from Okinawa Ichimushi-kai, a group that protects local species like the Okinawa rhinoceros beetle and medaka fish.We explored the school grounds to learn about the Okinawa beetle, guided by Raika Shimabukuro, a former AMICUS student. His detailed explanations amazed everyone—did you know there are nine types of cicadas in Okinawa?
After the walk, Mr. Kuninaka gave us more in-depth information about the beetles. Students were excited to hear that they might receive larvae after summer vacation to try raising their own beetles!
For lunch, parents kindly prepared homemade curry, cotton candy, and shaved ice. Before eating,
Sora Kishibe’s mother, who runs a pig farm, gave a meaningful talk about the pigs used for the curry—what kind of animals they are, and why we should value them.
On June 20th, all students from first to sixth grade gathered for a peace assembly. After a group chorus, we watched a video looking back on the 80 years since the end of the war. Then, a sixth-grade representative recited a poem. We listened to a speech by the principal and offered a moment of silent prayer. Finally, we watched a comedic version of Cinderella performed by the teachers, meant to help us feel how fortunate it is to be able to laugh. I’m sure everyone felt something while laughing. We are truly grateful for our everyday lives. After that, we participated in cross-grade group activities, planted sunflowers, and took photos together.
You worked hard and did your best on the field trip.Let’s keep thinking about local food and enjoy learning about what
